Is Resident Evil 9 Scarier than Resident Evil 7?

Few franchises have shaped the survival horror genre as profoundly as Resident Evil. Each new entry has not only redefined how fear and suspense are delivered, but also set new standards for what it means to be truly unsettled by a video game. As the series has evolved, its approach to horror has shifted in fascinating ways—sometimes trapping players in relentless dread, other times offering moments of relief and exhilaration.

Now, with the arrival of Resident Evil 9, a new debate has emerged among fans: which game delivers the most terrifying experience—Resident Evil 7 or Resident Evil 9? Having played both Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 9, I noticed a striking difference in how each game affected me after finishing them. The sheer intensity and oppressive atmosphere of RE7 left such a strong impression that I found myself reluctant to return for another playthrough—it was simply that unsettling. In contrast, after completing RE9, I felt energized and immediately dove back in, eager to experience its thrills again. This personal reaction highlights the different flavors of fear each game offers: RE7’s horror lingers and intimidates, while RE9’s blend of action and suspense invites repeated exploration.

Resident Evil 7: A Return to Pure Survival Horror: RE7 marks a dramatic return to the series’ survival horror roots, forcing players into a first-person perspective for the first time in the mainline series. This design choice is a game-changer: I was plunged directly into the nightmare, making every scare feel immediate and personal. The Baker family’s deranged presence, the claustrophobic environments, and the constant sense of vulnerability create an atmosphere where fear is unrelenting. The inability to distance yourself from the horrors means you’re always on edge, and the game rarely gives you a chance to relax. These elements combine to make RE7 one of the most intense and consistently frightening entries in the series.

Resident Evil 9: Thrills, Choice, and Moments of Relief: RE9, while still delivering its share of scares, takes a different approach. The option to switch out of first-person perspective allows players to distance themselves from the action, which can reduce the intensity of the horror. Don’t get me wrong, it is scary—especially seeing Grace trip while being chased by the “Girl” surely brings me not just to the edge of my seat, but on top of my lungs—shouting at her to RUN!

RE9 offers memorable shocks and suspenseful sequences, but the ability to take a step back can make the game feel less suffocating compared to RE7. There are moments that stand out—such as adrenaline-pumping chases and sudden threats—but the game also provides periods of relief, especially when familiar characters like Leon appear, giving players a sense of safety and control. RE9 excels at balancing horror with action, delivering more of a thrilling ride than a relentless nightmare. Maybe not the scariest, but one of the best by far.

Resident Evil 2: A Benchmark for Atmosphere: It’s important to consider Resident Evil 2 in any discussion of the series’ scariest games. RE2 is renowned for its oppressive atmosphere, chilling sound design, and a tone that’s unsettling from the very start. I recalled that when I started playing, I almost quit due to the sheer intensity of the opening sequences. While its perspective isn’t as immersive as RE7, the constant dread and tension make it a key reference point for how Resident Evil can instill lasting fear.

While both RE7 and RE9 deliver memorable horror experiences, RE7 stands out for me as the scarier game due to its relentlessly immersive first-person perspective and unyielding atmosphere of dread. RE9 provides scares but tempers them with player choice and moments of relief. Including RE2 in the conversation is important, as it sets the standard for atmosphere and tension, but between RE7 and RE9, the former is the more terrifying experience for me.

P.S. That dollhouse sequence in Resident Evil 8 is also scary! The mannequins and the “Baby” chasing you definitely make your heart skip a beat. Just saying…
